Writing Prompt 3: What Happened on my B-Day

John Lennon’s killer sentenced

On December 8, 1980 Mark David Chapman, “fan” of Lennon, shot the 40-year-old four times when he was walking towards his building during the night. What is interesting is that he stayed where he shot him. He was reading The Catcher in the Rye until the police arrived and took him into custody. Lennon was officially declared dead at Manhattan’s Roosevelt Hospital around 11:15 p.m.

Chapman at first entered a plea of guilt because of his insanity. He then dropped that defense and plead to second-degree murder.

On August 24, 1981, which is my birthday, Mark David Chapman was sentenced to 20 years of life for the murder of John Lennon.
