Writing Prompt 10: How do Expectations Affect You

Setting goals for someone is when you know a person is capable of doing something. Maybe you believe they are very good and in order to improve they have to know that someone is waiting for them to succeed or fail.

When people set standards for you, you feel pressured, even when it is something that you are really passionate about. I believe that when parents or coaches set high goals for you, it can be harder. Probably because they "know" what you are capable of doing. If people you don't  know talk negatively about you, saying that you are not good enough or that you are extremely good, you either want to prove them wrong or just mantain the success. But you don't necessarily feel pressured, perhaps because you don't know them.

Moreover, I suppose that when you set high goals for yourself, there is more pressure. Maybe you don't tell anyone, so you don't really "embarrass" yourself or you don't end up failing in public, but you do to yourself. However, a good thing is setting goals for yourself and maybe failing, but you keep trying.

Not everyone feels pressured when someone sets high goals for them. Sometimes they are very mental and they focus on being better for themselves. I strongly think that coaches, and especially parents, shouldn't chastise their student or child when they fail. You should let them know that is supposed to happen in order for you to succeed. You have to face obstacles and learn from them. If you really want something, keep being motivated and never stop trying.

And for those who don't have someone to tell them that failing is okay, well, please consider that it only matters that you are trying and that you are the one doing this for you. Do things that you like and want to learn from. Goals from others set to you aren't really goals because they aren't yours.
