Writing Prompt 8: A Promise
Why do people break promises? Have you ever broken a promise?
I wonder why people lie and say they will keep your secret when they won't. Sometimes you think, well why would you tell them a secret if they are going to tell someone else? You feel that you can trust them.
However, sometimes promises are broken because you need to tell the truth and you don't want to keep something that bothers you. But if you know something is wrong, then don't promise you will keep a secret when you know the truth has to be known.
When we were much younger, I believe it was very common to tell a friend's secret. I don't remember, but I believe they were nonsense secrets. But no matter the age, or the situation, a promise is a promise.
Nowadays, I only tell my best friends, I mean we know when we can't say something to everyone. We understand, and even if it wasn't something very serious, it is not ours to say.
It is natural for people to stop trusting someone after they've told their secrets. It may be harder for them to trust them again. They shouldn't have to.
I think there is something extraordinary when you have to keep a promise or a secret. It makes it more interesting. It is as if people have to descifer something because they don't know. You feel like a detective.
Please don't expect people to trust you again when you have broken a promise. I think it is somewhat the same when someone breaks a secret you told them. Think about the trust you have built with your friends before destroying it all.
Trusting is a very special factor to receive from others. Don't misuse it. If you know you can't keep a secret, then don't make them tell you.
